View of the crescent moon through the top of the earth’s atmosphere. Photographed above 21.5°N, 113.3°E. by International Space Station crew Expedition 13 over the South China Sea, just south of Macau (NASA image ID: ISS013-E-54329).  (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Eyes feast on a bit of sky
over an English countryside
through the lens of a train window, moving
An azure strip washed over the horizon
dripping
Ribbons of pearl and purple like satin shreds painted in
pink streaks overhead, flying

Fringed with white lace, now here, then gone
A new palette and a newer sky
come to view in one move, shuddering
The autumn light is a burnished amber
its first hues raw and fresher
Then a stroke of night appears
lustrous street light peers
through brushed clumps of dark trees
Beyond, dots of grey sheep like fat maggots from afar

curl together

in a deepening mass of muddied grassland

Station in frontal view, then
black tunnel vision ends

with colours running riot
The artist defying bounds with molten gold sunset
A masterful hand with densely-textured plate
hanging thinly over the earth’s slate
suspended in purple pool of atmospheric gases
Enhanced with a patina of smoky patches

I gape.
